This has been a long time coming! As most of you know, I've had my Instagram page for quite a while now, and I've started this blog many times, and then I would stop. After many requests from people asking where I'm going and how I do it all alone with my kiddos, I have finally decided to pick this back up again and hopefully stick with it!
Nothing makes me happier than hearing that so many moms and families want to get their kids outside and spend more time in nature, but just want to know how to get started and what they need to prepare for a day outside. Most importantly, though, they want to know where to actually go! I am starting this blog post to help you get outside with minimal prep. ;)
Now, let's get to the good stuff.
Trail: Blue Oak canyon Loop
Location: Holdener Park, Livermore, CA
A short and simple hike with gorgeous views of the surrounding lush green hills, and plenty of wildflowers to enjoy, the Blue Oak Canyon Loop in Holdener Park, Livermore, is the perfect start for moms who want to introduce their little ones to the outdoors. My girls loved this hike because there's so much to see and enjoy without having to hike for a long distance, and it's perfect if you're looking to get outside and feel like you've accomplished something without having to dedicate so much time out of your day to do it. This trail is located in Livermore, CA, and it's nestled in the back of a beautiful neighborhood right by a farm, and it's just a 1-mile loop! I'm not sure if the farm is open to the public, but nonetheless, hearing all the goats and farm animals in the background is always a bonus with the kiddos. Before you start the hike, make sure to pack some snacks, some water, hats, and possibly sunscreen if it's a hot day, as it can be a bit exposed for some portions, especially the paved section. If you choose to stay longer, as you can easily spend a few hours here exploring and hiking, then be sure to pack a lunch, enjoy a picnic, and take in the views.

As soon as you pull up to the parking area, you'll be blown away by the rolling, lush green hills. It's a small parking lot, so I imagine it could get busy on the weekends, so plan accordingly, like trying to get there early or catching a sunset would be great! After parking, you will head towards the paved path behind the farm animals, cross the bridge, and stay on the paved path. What is so nice is that it begins with the paved path, so you can bring scooters and bikes and just have the toddlers run wild and free with no concern for danger, just pure enjoyment. About 400ft after the bridge, you will come to a dirt path where you can turn left and really enjoy being nestled between the hills to start the 1-mile loop back to your car. There are also many side trails you can explore if you're feeling up for it.

When you're on the trail, you'll forget that you are so close to your car as you quickly begin the climb into these gorgeous hills! Your eyes will be drawn to the wildflowers blooming everywhere, and while it feels like we are still in winter, the blooms are already starting this year, so make sure to take advantage! We saw so many beautiful buttercups, bluedicks, mustards, and even some poppies!

Bluedicks starting to bloom too!
There is a side trail that goes along the hill to the right, about 100 feet after the start of the dirt path. If you have older kids, I would highly recommend going right and giving yourself a little bit more of a challenge and a different view, and then making your way back around to add more distance. It is a little risky as the path is narrower, so those with younger ones should use their best judgment.

Side trail from the main loop
Back on the main trail, eventually you'll reach a small creek crossing with a set of stairs. This is where you cross to continue along the loop.

Once you cross, it gets a little narrow so proceed with caution when with younger ones. My 3 year old did it just fine but each child is different. You can also carry your child or use a carrier if your not comfortable being that close to the edge.

You will be rewarded with amazing views and wildflowers beginning to bloom with a small creek along the way that kids we will be sure to explore!
After you cross and climb up those few steps, you will continue to the left and begin your loop back to the car. As soon as you start, you will quickly notice the bluedick wildflowers blooming all along the side! It is so breathtaking, and even though it's short, it's very beautiful and gives you the feeling of being away from civilization, with gorgeous views of the trees and hills.

When you come to the end of the loop, just turn left and cross the bridge back to your car. You can choose to go right and explore more trails if you're feeling up for it too. Don't forget to respect the environment and not disturb the wildflowers by picking or stepping on them. Make sure to pack out whatever you bring in and leave the place better than you found it so that others can also enjoy these trails when they come to visit. And most importantly, have fun!
